    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For the price you cann't buy a better saw I bought this saw 4 years ago and have cut dozens of oak, cherry and maple. I have a 14" bar and cut everything up to 12' diam. with it and it works great and makes fast work of limb cutting and turning tops into fire wood, have a heavier saw for the big stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little saw. I have had an 034 for 15 years and a MS391 for about a year and bought the little guy to use on all the smaller branches on the larger trees. The MS170 is much lighter and does not wear you out nearly as fast as the bigger saws do. If you start using it on larger diameter logs you really have to let the saw do the work, not get it pinched, and don't cut the dirt (same rules as when going after huge trees with a large saw). It cranks right up the same way as the big ones (full choke till burp, up a notch and one or 2 pulls later it is ripping right along)Do remember it has a thinner chain and and only 30cc, so if you think you will get into some larger trees (13" +) maybe take a look at the MS250 rather than pushing the little tike to its limits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great small chainsaw Bought this to cut up all the pruning my wife does before it goes through the chipper/shredder. Used to take me as much or more time to cut up all the branches, bushes, whole small trees, etc. with pruners and a saw than it did to put them through the chipper/shredder. Not anymore! The MS170 plowed through a huge pile of vegetative debris in a very short amount of time. Easy to start and use. The chain tension is a quick adjustment. The chainsaw cut up hardwood fast. The saw has plenty of power if you pay attention to your technique. The choke switch is very handy and I like the chain hand guard/quick stop feature for safety. The automatic oiler is also very nice.I think this is a great chainsaw value for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Minnesota tough , years on end I have had this saw for almost 4 years now. I ended up getting it because of a back injury and wanting something a little bit lighter to still accomplish cutting firewood. (Previous main saw a 1979 Stihl FarmBoss 041 which still runs fantastic ) This saw has done more than I could've ever expected a saw in this price range to do. I have cut all of the firewood (with the 14" bar) for the last three winters to heat a 2500 square-foot home during the nasty Minnesota winters . To this day I have not had to fix / replace ANYTHING but a few chains ! The only change I see myself doing at this point is adding the 171 to the collection .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great saw for the money I bought this saw two years ago on recommendation of a pro invasive weed eradicator we had hired, who said he had very positive experience with it. I bought it as a second saw to my older, heavier Stihl that I also love. This is lighter and just as powerful for my needs at age 73. Always starts (although I use ethanol-free gas and a fuel additive), runs very well. This is now my main go-to saw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This saw is light weight easy to operate love it Bought the ms 170 6 months ago and have cut many trees with it up to 16 inches in diameter. This saw works great for trimming smaller limbs but it is a work horse. Would recommend a bigger saw for anything over 16 inches just doesn't have the power to get through the bigger trees .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great chainsaw I picked up this chainsaw to cut up a large tree that fell down during a storm. It performed great and I had no problems with it. It cut thru 12 inch logs with no problems and I will definitely use it to do my next job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good overall reliable, very few problems. this is a very good saw for the money. this is my first stihl product I've owned. the only problem I have had is the oiler tends to clog up when cutting hardwoods. this saw always starts even in the bitter cold. I have cut oak and locust as big as 30 inches with it, but only because I know how to use a saw. this saw has proved u don't have to have big bulky saw to cut wood. its my favorite tool, it stays in my truck box year round. its very light, fairly powerful, and a great value. I would recommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great in tree saw this is the saw I take in the trees when I climb them. Love it. It is a great trim saw for just about everything. All my saws are stihl and far as I'm concerned always will be if they keep up the great work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love me this saw! This is my first big boy chain saw, and man can it gobble some wood! I've felled several trees already, from 16" to 32" in diameter...without hesitation. Great saw and would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This little saw has become my favorite tool I did a lot of research before I bought this chainsaw, and I have to look at this particular tool for what it was intended to do. This is not a saw that you buy if you want to drop 50 foot trees. I have a saw that does that nicely and it also weighs 15 pounds. No this little beauty is made for limbing and little maintenance cutting tasks. This Darling of a saw feels like a feather in your hand. It has a nice narrow kerf chain and does an admirable job of taking down limbs and small trees. I put a good solid day of work in with it yesterday and I am neither store nor tired. I would have to say that my 20 inch saw would have left me feeling much different. The beauty of this little saw though is what a nice piece of equipment it is for the money. This is my second Stihl and I am just as pleased with this purchase as I was with my first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best chainsaw I have ever owned. I have owned a number of different chainsaws in the past. My Stihl chainsaw is by far, the best of any other that I have ever owned. I am so impressed with the quality of my Stihl chainsaw, that from now on, I will only buy Stihl products for all of my outdoor tasks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Piece of junk, won't even crank I've had several cheap saws but at least they would start! This thing won't hit a lick. I bought this because everyone says go with Stihl because they're dependable. Big mistake! I guess I can throw it at the wood pile and knock it over. I'll be returning it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent saw! Very good saw for the money. It is as advertised. Will take care of most tasks around the house. Easy start and reliable. The saw is great for small jobs and even some larger tasks. Very light.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not impressed It broke down and wouldn't start the second time I used it. It does not have enough power and was constently bogging down. Stihl is suppose to be the best but after buying this saw I strongly disagree.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome never have to worrie about it not starting and the sales people belive in the product as well. after onwing several products this is the only product i will buy

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never ever starts If you like your arms getting bigger and your wood pile smaller, then purchase this. I spend more time pull starting this then cutting anything. If you don't start it within 3 or 4 pulls, it's flooded. Save yourself, but something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best saw for the money I've been cutting down a bunch of trees with it and it's been working like when I bought it a year ago this is the saw you would want to buy. There's no other saw comparable to it for the price. Just buy it ask no questions.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Have not been overwhelmed by the MS 170 I bought my MS 170 about a year ago and have used it in semi-commercial service at my RV Resort on Galveston Bay. From the start, this thing has been difficult to start (as mentioned by some posters, requiring 2-3 pulls with choke on then 2-3 pulls with choke off to get 'er started. Sometimes requiring more pulls than that). The Stihl narrow kerf (043") chain is DELICATE. Bumped a nail with one chain and the Sthl chain snapped. When a .043 chain gets thrown from the sprockets a grinder has been required to dress damaged chain links to allow them to rotate once more around the sprockets.MS 170 power is not the greatest. I have reverted to using my 16" McCullough Electric (with standard kerf chain) to cut though heaver stumps (more power from the electric).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall awesome saw. Can't beat a stihl. I love this saw for around the house chores. Best part is when you need it for the bigger items it works well too. Oils the bar, and runs excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stihl quality and performance This is my first gas chain saw. I have had a few electric models but they are so.. so. This is just right for my needs around the house and for our travel trailer at the campsite for firewood and clearing any damage due to summer or winter storms, as well for our home. Though we don't have a fireplace or wood burning stove, this saw will come in handy in case storm damage and also helping fellow neighbors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great little saw I cut wood for a living got in a bind and bought this saw cause it was inexpensive. not cheap by no means I have owned it almost a month and have cut over to twelve cord of wood mostly hedge and some locust. some of it 20 inches or better very impressed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly built chainsaw I used this chainsaw around the house for a couple of years, no big jobs, just little stuff. I noticed the bar was not getting oil so I shut it off and took it to a Stihl repair shop and they told me the crank was damaged and it runs the oil pump. He didn't want the saw for parts because he sees so many of them in his shop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This saw is a gem for around the house! I have owned my MS170 for only two months now, but it performs better than I expected. It starts up and runs exactly as it's supposed to, it quickly cuts through little and even much bigger material with ease, and it's light weight makes it a breeze to carry around. I don't know why I waited so long to buy a limbing saw, and this one really bears that out. I'd recommend it to anyone.
